4/26/18 Longsheng to Guilin

4/26/18

Longsheng to Guilin

We woke up to a foggy morning that quickly burned off.  Breakfast, pack up and then getting back in the van for more bumpy ride down the mountain.
After the Four Runner ride and then the shuttle bus, we met our van which had a flat tire.  The jack was not big enough for the van so there was quite a group of men trying to solve the problem.  After 3 jacks, a brick, and 5 men giving their opinions, we got the tire changed.

Breakfast

We left just in time.  the neighbor started to burn their garbage and the hotel filled with smoke as we were walking out the door.

The ride down.  We could have hiked, but it was really foggy and the kids wanted another bumpy ride.

How many people does it take to change a tire in china?

In Guilin, we visited a second grade class room.  We had asked to see if we could do this and the manager of the Guilin office has a son in the second grade.  He arranged with the teacher for a us to participate in their caligraphy class.
Forty second graders and us doing calligraphy.  it was hilarious. they started by doing a warm up choreographed dance in Chinese and then English about following the rules.
Then we created fans with traditional Chinese images on them using paint brushes.  I was surprised at how tolerant the teacher was of the craziness, but it was super fun and certainly a highlight for our kids so far.

After class, we went to the center of Guilin where they had just finished a 2 billion dollar renovation of the river and pagodas.  There is a ferry that takes you on a tour under bridges made after famous bridges around the world:  London Bridge, Golden Gate, Geometric Bridge, etc.
We also saw a tradition of fishing with cormorants.  They train the cormorants to catch the fish and then the fisherman will pull the fish out of the cormorant's mouth.  Pretty efficient, but not really my kind of fishing.

Pagodas in Guilin:  Fun fact:  they are the largest pagodas built in a lake in the world.  I guess there is a record for everything.

London Bridge

Check in to the hotel at 9pm and crash...

This was the view from the our window in the morning.
